It was a very exciting spring for Hawkstone Stables; we saw our Athena Watchover not only sweep the Triple Tiara, but follow in her sire's footsteps in winning the Preakness Stakes! This summer has seen us debut quite a number of newbies, all of which are WAY overdue for a showoff. The summer is coming to a close, and the Breeders' Cup is on the horizon, so here's a massive and overdue showoff from Hawkstone's Thoroughbred crew!
To begin, I'd like to introduce the breathtaking Ezio, hexed by Jewellz, who I will forever worship after having this sexy son of a gun. By our champion Sent by Ares and out of the very well-bred and talented Lethal (herself by Animosity and out of Hard Tack's Ruffian), to say we have high hopes for this horse would be a massive understatement. A front-runner like his sire, Ezio has already shown significant early promise, breaking his maiden in his racing debut over 10 other rivals, as well as taking an open level stakes in impressive fashion. The eventual goal for him is, as you may expect, to shoot for the Triple Crown next year and attempt to become the first Kentucky Derby winner for Hawkstone Stables.
For a long time, Gucci was the lovable loser of Hawkstone Stables, going 35 races without a win before finally breaking through and winning her 37th and 38th start this February. Monhroe seems to have taken the chance to fill that void. In March (told you this was way overdue...), Rafael had an epic hexing service where she hexed a foal of two real life horses, and I was soooo excited to get this gorgeous filly from that. She is hexed to be a daughter of the real life stallion Lonhroe - a physical monster of a horse if there ever was one, - and one of my favorite mares of all time, Balletto. She's yet to win in 28 tries so far, but I still love her to death and can't wait to get her stats up to the point where I can breed her and have babies on this lovely mod.
When Hard Tack put out a breeding service, I obviously couldn't resist the chance to get a homebred from their stock. Since the retirement of Vermillion, Hawkstone has been a bit weak in the sprinter division, so a sprinter was requested and here she is! Enenra is by Amiguri and out of Yuuku. She's won one of her four starts to date, and I think we could have a very talented filly on our hands.
Our most recent acquisition is this gorgeous girl, Ambiance. She's by our own Animosity and out of Sovenance, who I have been totally in love with ever since the Triple Tiara. I'm thrilled to have a filly out of her, and I think Animosity was a great match. Haubing hexed her beautifully, and she's just been entered in her first race, so I'm crossing my fingers for a good debut effort!
In addition to those hexed by others, we've had a few homebred/home-hexed foals that we've been starting to campaign. Some of them will likely end up being available to claim in the near future, so keep an eye out on those optional claiming races. I'd like to get some Hawkstone-bred horses into other barns, and think the claiming concept could be utilized more.
First and foremost is Sarcastrophe, a colt whose birth has been planned for ever since his dam's birth. He is the first foal from both Duality and Athena Watchover, and a combination of Hawkstone's best horses. Duality is by BC Classic winner Animosity and out of our champion Vermillion, and Athena Watchover is by Horse of the Year and BC Classic winner Sent by Ares, out of BC Mile winner and multiple BC runner-up Paris in Flames. He's admittedly been a bit of a slow starter compared to his pedigree, winning only one of his 15 career starts so far, but there's no reason to expect that he won't improve with more conditioning. After all, he moved into G3 company very early on because of his high birth stats.
Here we have Jeopardy, a son of Warranty and out of Paris in Flames. He's still working on breaking his maiden, but he's bred to be a good one - both his sire and dam were not only talented in their own right, but are proven producers of seriously talented horses; most notable, of course, is Paris in Flames' daughter Athena Watchover.
Rephaim is the first foal of Reggatta de Blanc, a filly from brilliant Hard Tack breeding (by Secretariat and out of Zenyatta). Reggatta herself has seen only moderate success on the racetrack, but Rephaim came out swinging, winning his racing debut. He's by Perazim, one of my personal favorite stallions even if he isn't necessarily the greatest horse Hawkstone has ever seen.
Reprieve is a son of our classic stallion Repose and Silver Swallow. He's another one that's actually been around since February, so if you follow SS racing you may have seen him around. I'm tentatively planning on keeping either him or Rephaim as a potential Kentucky Derby candidate next year (along with Ezio and Sarcastrophe).
Challenger Deep is by Skadar and out of Marianas Trench. He's still working to break his maiden, but with his pedigree I think he'll quickly prove to be an exceptional horse on both surfaces, with perhaps a bit more of a turf leaning. And, while I'm not one to marvel my own hexes, I do have to say I find him awfully pretty. Of course, that's simply because I like sabinos, not because I'm exceptionally good at hexing them
